The Secret Life of Bees, Lily Owens, who is a 14 year old white girl, that grew up on a peach farm in South Carolina. Lily lives with her abusive father T-Ray and her black nanny Rosaleen, because her mother died when she was 5. The Civil Rights movement is going on at the same time that Lily is growing up, and she really doesn't understand why so many white people act the way they do to black people.

Lily Owens does not grow up like most people, many parts of her life are unusual but she still seemed to overcome everything thrown at her. She was raised in an abusive home and without a mother, and she was able to stay strong and grow and learn and do her best. Throughout the story T-Ray always seemed to need to have power, especially over Lily. At the beginning of the story she is niave and doesn't understand alot of what is going on around her,but when she runs away and lives with the three sisters she begins to start to realize the differences in how blacks and whites are treated. But throughout the story Lily grows and matures. The main thing that causes the change in Lily is when she sees how the sisters she lives with are treated. And by the end of the story Lily is a strong white girl that does the best she can to do the right thing for everyone.

Lily owens is a strong person throughout the entire book, and throughout the story she matures and learns quite a bit about all the things going on around her. she learns that blacks and whites are the same and should be treated that way. Lily owens has a hard life but through it all she still manages to grow and learn through the whole book.
